Shawn Bolz

Shawn Bolz was a trusted guest minister who frequently spoke on our platform and whose products were available in our stores. In 2019, allegations were made about his ministry practices, inappropriate behavior, and creating an unacceptable work environment. At that time, Bethel chose to stop platforming his ministry. Bethel has since faced criticism and taken accountability for not being more public about the situation sooner.

Bethel's Position on Ministry Platforming

As we review platforming, we want to follow clear biblical standards for public ministry leadership. If there are proven patterns of behavior that do not align with biblical standards, we will not platform, endorse, or support that person for ministry leadership here.

Answered Questions

As we engage in conversation and review feedback, many questions have arisen for leadership on this topic. Here are the questions and answers that we've currently published.

If Bethel was not formally covering Shawn, what did Bethel apologize for?

We are clear that we are not responsible for Shawn’s sin, he is. But we are equally clear that we are responsible for our sins, actions, and inactions after the fact. James 4:17 states, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

The truth is, we have hurt and scared people because we did not tell the truth enough, early enough, long enough, or loud enough, and this is a just criticism. Our hearts are grieved, and embarrassed. When we sin or mess up publicly as we have, it’s important to take responsibility publicly, to listen as people share their frustration, sadness, fears, and corrections.

What was the nature of Bethel’s relationship with Shawn Bolz, and when did that position change?

Shawn Bolz was not and has never been a staff member at Bethel Church, but was a guest speaker at various gatherings and events until 2019. Shawn has his own ministry and board to which he is accountable, and was not formally under the covering of Bethel Church or its leadership team. In 2019, when confronted multiple times with concerning allegations of harassing behavior and a lack of prophetic integrity, we decided to remove him from our platforms, take down his resources from our store, remove his sermons from our network, and to communicate to ministry friends that we knew had him on their platforms as well.

What is Bethel’s position regarding Shawn Bolz and his ministry?

The evidence we have seen concerning Shawn’s prophetic integrity has produced broken trust with his ministry. We believe that Shawn was not truthful in how he received his words of knowledge and prophetic words. We also acknowledge our belief that he engaged in sexually explicit and harassing behavior towards some members of his staff. We do not condone his actions, or endorse his ministry. We strongly advise you to take our position into account if you choose to interact with his materials.

Organizational Health

We have engaged in ongoing conversations with our community—including those impacted by recent events, current and former students, staff, and trusted outside voices. We are establishing clear accountability structures that prioritize integrity and the safety of everyone engaging with Bethel, both inside and outside the organization. We seek to uphold the standards Scripture sets for our leadership and culture. As a result, we're committed to a continued journey of sober reflection and concrete action.

Third-Party Investigation

An independent organization with expertise in complex investigations is leading the inquiry into allegations involving a specific leader and our response. Simultaneously, we are conducting a thorough, long‑term review to implement organization-wide changes that prioritize strong safeguards and a safe, supportive environment.

Bob Hartley

Bob Hartley was a previously platformed minister who visited and ministered within the Bethel environment. As of 2024, his platform and his ability to engage with our environment has been restricted.

Safe Church

Bethel Church’s Community Guidelines and Safe Church process exist to continue the work of revival through supporting physical, emotional, and spiritual health within the Bethel community, and to provide a safe place if an unhealthy or unacceptable interaction or experience should take place.
