Set Free From Drug Addiction

February 4, 2024
A man receives ministry at church, regains his identity in Christ, and receives freedom from substance abuse.

A man experienced a life-changing moment, though he didn't fully realize its significance until about three weeks later. Through Kris Vallotton Ministries, specifically the video “Prophetic Culture,” he eventually recognized and understood what had happened to him. He was struggling with drug addiction, exhausted physically and emotionally, and recovering from surgery he had undergone the previous year. During recovery, he had been prescribed an excessive amount of medication, which contributed to his downward spiral into further substance abuse.

While attending church with his wife, she mentioned that she believed Kris was present. After the service, as the prayer team ministered to people, he decided to approach Kris for prayer, despite not really knowing who he was. During the interaction, Kris spoke about believers being so supernatural that when people encounter them, they encounter the Father. He also shared that Jesus died for the treasure in the field and that people are called to draw out the gold in one another. As they looked into each other’s eyes, he experienced a profound connection unlike anything he had known before. Kris prayed for him, breaking the chains of addiction and the false identity that he was an addict. From that day forward, although temptation came occasionally, the overwhelming compulsion to use drugs completely disappeared.

A few weeks later, while watching the “Prophetic Culture” video, he heard the story of Samuel telling Saul that he would encounter the prophets and be changed into another man. In that moment, he realized that the same transformation had occurred in his own life. He understood that while a person is not physically transformed into someone else, the things that distort identity are stripped away, restoring the individual to who they truly are.

Since that experience, he testified that the Spirit of God had remained with him continuously. The transformation was overwhelming and undeniable. His relationships, especially with his children, were dramatically restored and strengthened. He related deeply to parts of Kris’s personal story and reflected that although he had accepted the Lord at age 23, his life had never truly changed until that encounter. He described a constant awareness of God’s presence within his spirit and soul. Having lost his sister to drug addiction at the age of 36, and being only 31 himself, the breakthrough carried even greater significance. He expressed gratitude for the ministry resources, podcasts, and videos from Bethel that helped expose the lies surrounding addiction and identity.

His struggle with drugs had begun at age 16, escalating to heroin use in his early twenties. However, he now understood that addiction was never his true identity. Reflecting on Romans, he shared his belief that the old self has completely died, and that people must choose whether to resurrect that former identity. As Kris often said, “You can’t fight a dead person.”

He described the entire experience as a complete miracle. His life had been radically transformed, and he had since begun ministering to others. The encounter was entirely unexpected; he had not anticipated a miracle or any dramatic experience. Only later did he realize he had received what he called “the prophet’s reward.” Filled with gratitude and excitement, he celebrated the profound change that had taken place in his life.
